About
Ashler Jaya is the mixologist, host and creative behind The Mixologist ZW — a Zimbabwean beverage brand built on hospitality, curiosity and drinks made with intention.
“A drink is the first thing a guest is handed and the last thing they remember. It should be worth remembering.”
Ashler Jaya
The Mixologist ZW began with a simple observation: in Zimbabwe, a great deal of care goes into food, décor and music at an event — and comparatively little into what ends up in the glass. Ashler set out to change that, treating the bar as part of the guest experience rather than a station in the corner.
What started with drinks for friends and family celebrations grew into a full service brand covering mobile bars, weddings, corporate functions, catering and brand work.
Ashler Jaya's beverage career began in hospitality, including work at Frenchman's Creek Golf and Beach Country Club in Florida in 2014. Published profiles also describe experience across Zimbabwe, South Africa, Seychelles, China and the United States, alongside a Hospitality Management degree from the Swiss Hotel School and wine study at the Cape Wine Academy.
That background keeps the work hospitality-led: reading a room, keeping service moving, and giving guests who choose not to drink the same attention as everyone else.
Every menu starts with the people who will drink from it. Who is coming, what is the weather doing, how long is the event, what is being eaten, what does the host want guests to feel? The recipes follow from those answers.
Balance matters more than complexity. A drink with four ingredients that is correctly built and properly chilled will always beat a drink with twelve that is not. Presentation is deliberate but never fussy — a garnish must earn its place by adding aroma, flavour or contrast.
Mocktails are designed, not improvised. Every menu carries alcohol-free serves built with the same structure, acidity and finish as their alcoholic counterparts.
Zimbabwe grows extraordinary things, and the most interesting drinks on any menu are usually the ones that could not be made anywhere else. Seasonal fruit, indigenous flavours, local honey and fresh herbs appear regularly in the syrups, cordials and infusions made in-house.
Working locally is also practical: fresher produce, shorter supply chains and menus that reflect the season a guest is actually standing in.
The Mixologist ZW works with beverage brands and agencies on serve development, activations and campaign support — building drinks that express a product and can be poured consistently at volume.
Her work has included an official mixologist partnership with 1966 Artisanal Rum Punch, where she developed a digital cocktail recipe book and virtual mixology course. GQ South Africa also recognised Ashler among its Zimbabwean creatives to know, noting support from brands including Jameson, Koovha Beverages and Delta Corporation.
Beyond the bar, The Mixologist ZW builds complete hosted experiences — guided tastings, styled service and food and drink planned as one thing rather than two. Private groups, bridal parties and corporate teams are all catered for.
The point is always the same: a guest should be looked after from the first drink to the last course, without noticing the machinery behind it.
Ashler and The Mixologist have been profiled by GQ South Africa, The Herald, VOA Zimbabwe and lifestyle publications including Becoming The Muse. Across those features, the recurring story is the same: a Zimbabwean hospitality entrepreneur making cocktail culture more accessible, with fresh produce and local flavour at the centre of the work.
